Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
If your Body Mass Index is dangerously high, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery can be the first stage in your journey toward a healthier life. Sleeve gastrectomy, also called the stomach staple surgery, can be performed as the first stage of a gastric bypass surgery operation for those whose BMI makes other weight loss surgeries less safe.
In this two-stage plan, Dr. Dahiya first performs the laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy, in which he staples, then removes about two-thirds of your stomach. The remaining portion is shaped like a tube, or sleeve. The sleeve has a capacity of about 200 ml, which is enough for a full meal, but helps keep you from overeating. This is how gastric sleeve surgery works to help you lose weight. If you stick to your post-surgery weight loss program with help from our team of weight loss professionals, you should be able to get down to a safe weight for gastric bypass surgery.
Another benefit of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is that it does not interfere with your body’s absorption of nutrients. Therefore, sleeve gastrectomy patients tend to have fewer nutrition problems after their weight loss surgery.
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass is designed to help you eat less and feel full faster. The most commonly performed type of gastric bypass surgery, Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass connects the small intestine to a small pouch, which gives a rapid feeling of fullness after eating just a small amount of food. This effect, combined with a commitment to vigorous exercise and better nutrition, can help you finally get back to a healthy weight.
To ensure that your recovery time after Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass surgery goes quickly and involves less pain, Dr. Dahiya uses the very latest laparoscopic surgery techniques. Laparoscopic surgery uses small, targeted incisions to get your bariatric surgeon’s instruments where they need to go instead of the large, open incisions used in the past. This drastically reduces the risks and complications of weight loss surgery, especially the risk of surgical site infection and hernia.
LAP-BAND Surgery – The least invasive option for weight loss surgery
The LAP-BAND® system is an adjustable, removable gastric band that cinches around your stomach, creating a small pouch at the top. With the LAP-BAND® device in place, the pouch fills up quickly after eating just a small amount of food, making you feel satisfied. After your operation, your LAP-BAND® surgeon can adjust the amount of saline in the gastric band without additional surgery, making it tighter or looser as needed. The LAP-BAND® system can even be adjusted to allow for a healthy pregnancy, and unlike gastric bypass surgery, the LAP-BAND® procedure is fully reversible.
LAP-BAND® surgery does not involve re-routing your digestive tract, which makes LAP-BAND® less painful than other bariatric procedures and allows for a faster recovery. Our surgeon performs LAP-BAND® surgery through just a single, small incision using the state-of-the-art SPIDER® Surgical System, which also speeds up your recovery and reduces the risk of infection and other complications.
REALIZE Band Surgery
If you know you could benefit from bariatric weight loss surgery, but are wary of having an irreversible operation like gastric bypass surgery, REALIZE® Band surgery offers a much less invasive option.
Called the Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band (SAGB) outside the United States, the REALIZE® Band was approved by the FDA in 2007 after more than 20 years of successful use around the world. The REALIZE® Band is a popular alternative to the LAP-BAND®, another gastric banding device used for weight loss surgery in the US.
If you’re wondering how the REALIZE® Band works, it’s really quite simple. The REALIZE® Band is gently secured around your stomach, then cinches around it to create a small pouch at the top of the stomach. The pouch is connected by a very small opening to the lower stomach, so it fills up quickly, usually after you eat about half a cup of food. Once the pouch is full, it sends a signal to your brain that leaves you feeling satisfied after eating just a small portion. As a result, you can reduce your calorie intake and lose your excess pounds at a healthy rate of one or two per week.
Revision Bariatric Surgery – A second chance at success
If you have already undergone bariatric weight loss surgery, but have since regained too much of the weight you lost, you may be frustrated and discouraged. The most common reason why people need a second bariatric surgery is because they slipped up on their diet and exercise plan. Bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass surgery, creates a small stomach pouch so that you feel full faster. However, if you make a mistake and continue to overeat, that pouch can stretch and allow you to eat more than you should before you feel satisfied. As a result, you gain weight.
If this has happened to you, a second chance at a healthy life is still possible. Here at Coast Plaza, we can shrink your stomach pouch using the minimally invasive ROSE and StomaphyX procedures. These high-tech endoscopic surgical procedures require no incisions and are quite effective at giving you a second chance to finally defeat obesity.
Both the ROSE and StomaphyX procedures use a specialized device designed for patients who have had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, but did not succeed in losing enough weight or have regained too much. First, Dr. Dahiya will check the size of your stomach pouch with a quick endoscopy to see if it has stretched. If revision bariatric surgery is needed, we can schedule your procedure. Because both ROSE and StomaphyX are minimally invasive procedures without incisions, recovery time is minimal and you will probably be able to return to work within a day or so.
